Stephen HillFLCM, ARCM, ARAM (Hons)

Stephen hails from Ashbourne, Derbyshire and studied at the Royal College of Music.  His first solo engagment being ST MATTHEW PASSION at the Royal Festival Hall, conducted by Sir David Willcocks.  His West End credits includes the original London cast of SWEENEY TODD at Drury Lane, JEEVES TAKES CHARGE at the Fortune Theatre and CATS at the New London Theatre, where he was also Production Vocal Director for 12 years.

 

For many years he directed his vocal group THE STEPHEN HILL SINGERS making frequent recordings for radio, television and films.  Their work ranging from a Duke Ellington album with Johnny Mathis to the soundtracks of Kenneth Branagh’s blockbuster HENRY V and Ennio Morricone's score for CITY OF JOY (with Patrick Swayze). They also recorded the RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL CHRISTMAS ALBUM for Sony and appeared in the musical sketches on the VICTORIA WOOD AS SEEN ON TV series.

 

They appeared on many of the Royal Variety and Children’s Royal Variety Shows, and were the backbone for the BBC Radio2 series of Musicals in which Stephen appeared in all 24 of them. His most notable credits include The Caliph in KISMET, Mr Erlanson in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, Harry in MY FAIR LADY, Peter in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, , Larry in A CHORUS LINE  and Roscoe in Stephen Sondheim’s FOLLIES which was recorded live at Drury Lane in the presence of the Composer, who acclaimed Stephen as “the definitive Roscoe!”

 

Much in demand as a vocal coach, director and arranger, Stephen was Choral Director of the Musical Theatre Degree Course at the Royal Academy of Music for eighteen years during that time was Vocal Director for Elton John’s concerts at the Royal Opera House in 2000 as well and his 2004 UK Tour, sell-out performances at New York’s Radio City Music Hall and also Elton’s finale segment at CONCERT FOR DIANA, live from Wembley.

 

Stephen conducted the Elton John Gala in aid of the RAM at the Royal Albert Hall and also directed the musical sequence for Stephen Sondheim’s Doctorate Ceremony.  He has also been an adjudicator at Llangollen International Eisteddfod, and recently been appointed External Examiner for the University of Wales-Trinity St David
